Back to Roma

We took a taxi to the Viareggio train station and took the express train back to Rome. When we arrived at Roma Termini, we grabbed a taxi that took us to our hotel, The Duke. We had to drive right by the Borghese property and National Museum of Modern Art.
We checked in at the hotel, which is located in a residential area--not walking distance to anywhere. We had chosen that hotel based on the recommendation of a collegue that DH had to meet with--but we did not realize it was so far from everything. We had lunch in the hotel's lounge: a hamburger, fries and iced tea. We shared the hamburger and fries, which were so-so. The iced tea was very refreshing, but we're quite certain it's Lipton out of a bottle poured into a glass...for 5 Euros each! I wish you could get regular, non-sweetened iced tea in Europe (haven't found it yet).
The good thing about our hotel was that there is a free shuttle that takes guests to the top of the Spanish Steps. You have to reserve a spot though, since there are only 7 seats. So we took the shuttle down and started our adventure in Rome. We tossed our coins in the Trevi Fountain, of course, just to make sure we go back. ;) We walked all around. We saw this one sunken area of ruins called the Sacred Area of Largo Argentina. It is now a sanctuary for stray cats! We had a great dinner at Caffe Argentina right across the way. We sat outside on the edge nearest the square. We had a great dinner with wine. The only bad thing was there was a homeless woman laying next to the building across the way, and she kept yelling out what I can only imagine were Italian obscenities.
We then walked over to the Pantheon and took that in. Near there we found an incredible gelato place--we decided we would have to go there after dinner the next night. We took a taxi back to the hotel and crashed. Still no sign of my suitcase. Sigh. More thumbnails ...
