We packed up the car, said goodbye to my family, and got on the road. Our destination: Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California. Even though it is not that far from where I grew up, I had never been there.

The kids and I had watched a show (on the Travel Channel) about the house and its eccentric owner, Sarah Winchester, so we decided that we wanted to go see it the next time we went up to see my family.

We got into San Jose at lunch time, so we stopped at a hole-in-the-wall Mexican place called, Tacos al Pastor. It was great.

From there we went to the main event. DH bought our tickets, then we all walked around the gift shop. I was amazed at how big the gift shop was. One room had a big gingerbread house made to look like the Winchester house. I was also amazed that the Winchester house is right in the middle of town surrounded by houses and businesses.

There was also a cafe where a lot of people were eating expensive snacks. Since we had to wait awhile before our tour began, we walked around some of the grounds, and also the Winchester Historic Firearms Museum which has a huge array of rifles and other firearms on display. Incidently, you don't need a ticket to go into that part.

The house was quite something. It really does have the strange twists and turns, doors and stairs that lead to nowhere, and lots of items in 13s (hooks on the wall and candles on a candleabra for instance).

It was fun, but now I can say "been there done that." It is very touristy, but interesting to see once.
