After class I went down the street to get some food. I didn't eat anything for breakfast, so I was quite hungry.

I went to the underground to get some cold jasmine tea and some snacks. Today's potato chip flavor: Texas Grilled BBQ. Then I went across the street to a little vendor and got what I would call a Chinese burrito made with shredded carrots and potatoes inside a tortilla. It was quite delicious. I also got a sweet bread thing. It's round and somewhat flat with sesame seeds on the top. It's soft with a hint of sweetness. I had gotten one yesterday for breakfast while we waited for Modou. I wish I had known about this place sooner. My two things (a complete meal) only cost 3.50 RMB, and I'm completely satisfied.

I'm a little bit worried because it seems my air conditioner is not working. This is my biggest fear here in China--no A/C!! I can survive almost anything except the heat. :b I think I need to call someone. But who?

I texted Gloria to tell her about the A/C, but I haven't heard from her. I'll have to go over to the office and see what they say. The dorm ladies, well, I can't communicate with them. Agggghhhhh. It's getting hotter and hotter in here.

I saw Gloria a little while later, she said she talked to one of the dorm ladies, and they called to have it fixed.

Meanwhile, I went out with Ada for our last outting before she goes back to the U.S. I was quite proud of myself, because I took the subway on my own, transferring lines and everything. She planned a spa day for us. We went to a spa that her parents belong to as members. She got her hair cut while I got a one-hour message, after a wonderful shower (it was so clean!).

Then I got my hair washed. Doesn't sound exciting, I know. But they do it with you sitting in the chair. They message your head and shoulders too. Then you go over to the bowl and it gets rinsed out. Also they do this water technique that is hard to describe...this wide stream of water goes over your eyes, ears, and forehead without going down your face. It's a really cool sensation.

Then I went back to the chair. She was going to brush out my wet hair, but I told Ada, she wouldn't be able to get through my hair with a brush. So then she got a small comb. Oh, dear. I'm not sure they had every seen hair like mine: thick, thick, layer upon layer of curly/wavy hair. A guy came over with a blow dryer, and he was going to start drying my hair without combing it out first. OMG, no. I told Ada my hair would be a big puff ball of knots. She laughed and said she'd like to see that. Yeah. No.

So I had them bring me a bigger comb and I started combing it myself, layer by layer. They didn't have any leave-in conditioner or anything so I didn't have time to get it all combed out by the time we had to leave to go to our foot messages. So I put it up in a ponytail knot and left it 'til later.

We went to an old building, and we got a room in the basement. Ada said her husband's grandfather used to own that building and live in it, and her husband would play in the basement. How cool is that? Also, she told me that the basements were used as places to hide during the air raids by the Japanese during WWII.

So we had our awesome messages then went to dinner at a restaurant next to the drum tower. It was very busy with lots of people. It's a famous place and has been there for many, many years. It has typical breakfast food, but people eat there for every meal.

Ada got a few different things for me to try. The first was this jiggly, gelatinous goo with liver and intestines in it. I was somewhat disgusted just looking at it. I knew I wouldn't like it. First, I don't like jiggly, gelatinous goo of any kind: not jello, pudding, American yogurt, jelly or jam, or anything like that. There was no way I was going to like this stuff. I tried it though. It was way worse than the cicada! Bleh!!!

Then the other thing was a soup with similar innerds, intestines being the main one. I think I tasted the soup, but I just couldn't eat the intestines. I do have limits when it comes to food. One of the things I really liked were these chip like things made from green bean flour. They were covered in garlic and delicious.

After this, we went to another restaurant that served long, rectangular dumplings. Those were good as well. We dipped them in vinegar and chili oil (mixed together). She also ordered what I would call soybean hummus, but I did not care for that. We also had wonderfully fresh, crisp cucumbers in maybe some sort of vinegar dressing.

We then walked back along this really cool street called Nan Luo Gu Xiang (I think that's right). It has great stores and restaurants. I am planning on going back there on my own before I leave because we didn't have time to go in anywhere, since I had to get back to the dorm by 10 pm.

Her husband came and picked us up and dropped me off at the dorm.

Thank you Ada for all you have done to make my trip so amazing!!

So then, I went up to my room and of course, the A/C was still not fixed. I had told Gloria I would just sleep in another room if the A/C was still broken. No big deal. I tried to open the door to some of the other rooms on my floor, but they were locked. I was the only person on the entire 6th floor, so all the other rooms were unoccupied.

I walked down to the 3rd floor office. The dragon lady was there (the mean dorm lady). I called Ada and asked her to ask the lady to unlock one of the rooms so I could sleep there. When I got back on the phone with Ada, she said the lady couldn't do that and I should try calling Gloria or someone.

So I called Gloria. She talked to the lady and when I got back on the phone with Gloria, she said the same thing: that she can't do that. All this time, I had been standing in the office (she never offered me a seat), getting more and more angry at how ridiculous the situation had become.

Gloria said she would try to call someone with more authority. While I waited for her to call me back, the dragon lady told me in Chinese and gestures that I should just take a shower and go to sleep. I said, "No, that won't work. It's too hot." She hissed back, "Too hot." It was then that I realized she understands a lot more English than she leads people to believe.

She continued to spout off a bunch of stuff to me in Chinese, and I told her I don't understand. I tried to, but I couldn't. I had brought down a phrase book and Chinese/English dictionary. I offered her the dictionary so she could communicate with me. She just shook her head no.

Finally, Gloria called back. She only got a hold of Bonnie and they talked about the situation. They couldn't get a hold of anyone who had enough power over this witch. I was losing control of my emotions. I conceded to Gloria, said ok and we hung up.

I then immediately turned on the dragon lady and with tears in my eyes, pointing at her, spouted, "YOU are ridiculous. There is no one but me on the 6th floor. There is NO reason you can't open up one of those rooms!!!"

Well, she didn't like that. She came over and pointed to my phone. I knew exactly what she wanted, so I hit Gloria's number and handed her the phone. She spoke very harshly to Gloria for quite a long time, then gave the phone to me. Gloria said she was going to unlock a room. I asked Gloria, "but she had to tell you off first?" Gloria wouldn't respond. She just said she's crazy and to just let her unlock the door.

So I waited, patiently. Waited and waited. She got herself some water, took one sip then put the cup down. She switched off the lights in the hallways. She made a phone call--I'm quite certain it was a call to complain about what just had happened. I also have the distinct feeling that she was not being truthful about it. She started writing in a notebook. Writing and writing. I continued to stand against the wall, saying and doing nothing.

Gloria called back. "Are you in a room?" Nope. So I told her all the things the dragon lady had been doing INSTEAD of unlocking a door. Gloria talked to her again. Again, the dragon lady had a harsh tone on the phone. Gloria told me she would unlock a door. The dragon lady took her sweet time.

It took a good hour of phone calls and waiting to finally get a room unlocked. She is an evil bitch.
