We got ready and walked to the train station (Frankfurt am Main Hbf). We had some time before departure so DH was determined to get some Starbucks coffee. :b We didn't need to have a reservation, so we walked down to a 1st Class car and grabbed a compartment on what was an older train.
It took 1 1/2 hrs to get to Heidelberg with all the stops at several other stations. We came out of the Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof and had no idea where to go. We decided to just take a taxi up to the castle which was quick and painless.
The castle was amazing
We took the funicular down to the old town. We walked to the Marktplatz (market square) where executions and burnings of witches and heretics used to take place (echh!). It was very pretty, decorated for Christmas. We had lunch on the corner at what I would call a German diner called Hahn im Korb. DH and I had Bratwurst; the kids had fish and chips. It actually snowed while we were eating. We could see the big flakes floating down outside. It didn't stick though.
From there we went into the Heiliggeistkirche church which is right in the square. We then walked down to the Alte Brucke bridge and around the block to an antique store that was open (most stores were closed). I found a very pretty framed engraving of Speyer Cathedral for 5 euros. Bargain!
We then continued down the main street, Untere Strasse
We stopped at a beautiful cafe, Perkeo, for drinks and dessert. We girls had chocolate mousse cake, the boys had strudel. My latte was yummy.
When we got to the end of the street, we weren't sure how far we were from the train station, so we took a taxi there. Our timing was perfect. We found out what platform the next train to Frankfurt would be on, and we headed there, got on and the train left. We got our own compartment again on a modern IC train this time. This journey only took an hour because it didn't stop at so many stations along the way.
We are just relaxing in the room now. We are ordering takeout pizza and salad for dinner. I'm still full from lunch and dessert though. It was a great day. Heidelberg is lovely.
