I have only been to NYC on one trip that was many years ago. Certainly there is no wonder that this city is listed in the "1000 Places..." book.

But for whatever reason, I didn't really like NYC that much; I don't know why. I have always loved big cities, and in America, they don't come any bigger or brighter.

We stayed at the Marriott Marquis right on Times Square; I could look out our window and see that big screen with all the advertising lights.

I think I got a good general overview of the city. We ate at some good restaurants, went on a Circle Line boat tour around Manhattan on a gorgeous day, we saw two broadway shows, shopped at Macy's, and took a carriage ride around Central Park. We saw the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, Rockefeller Center, and the Statue of Liberty. And even the doomed Twin Towers. We walked on Wall Street and through SoHo and Greenwich Village.

I loved everything we did and saw. But I think I had a preconceived notion that NYC was full of thieves, gang members, and beggars. I was young and naive. I had a horrible night terror one of the nights there (worse than any dream I've ever had, before or since). Of course, it was nothing like I had seen on t.v. and in movies (with scary characters at every corner). Some day I'll get back there, and I will have a different perspective and better outlook.
