One time I visited San Francisco with my friend and her family; I was maybe 10 or 11 years old. We took the ferry over to Alcatraz Island ("The Rock") and did the tour of the prison that is surrounded by craggy rocks in the middle of San Francisco Bay. It was kind of creepy, but cool at the same time, definitely not a place I would want to be incarcerated. The tour guide told of many unsuccesful escape attempts. Some prisoners were eaten by sharks in the cold bay water. Ack!

I also got to see Alcatraz Island from a bird's perspective. We took a helicopter flight over the city and bay, and got a nice view of the island.
