There are twenty-one missions in California. The author only talks about a few of them, but I thought I would list them all here (information from a booklet titled, "California Missions"):

1. San Diego de Alcala (San Diego): The first mission to be built--I visited this mission a few years ago when we lived in San Diego. The area is quite pretty.

2. San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo (Carmel): Haven't been to this one.

3. San Antonio de Padua (Near King City and Paso Robles): I had never even heard of this one, but it is about 20 miles from Paso Robles.

4. San Gabriel Arcangel (San Gabriel--near Los Angeles): Have not visited. It is nearby, so I will try to go there one of these days.

5. San Luis Obispo de Tolosa (San Luis Obispo): Have not visited.

6. San Francisco de Asis (San Francisco): Have not visited.

7. Mission San Juan Capistrano (San Juan Capistrano): This is a beautiful mission with some interesting ruins.

8. Santa Clara de Asis (Santa Clara): Not visited.

9. San Buenaventura (Ventura): Visited in June of 2011. A very pretty little mission right in the historic downtown of Ventura, CA.

10. Mission Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara): This is also a beautiful mission with breathtaking grounds. There is a clever water system still in operation there.

11. La Purisima Concepcion (near Buellton): Never heard of this one either.

12. Mission Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz): I think I may have visited this on one of our many trips to Santa Cruz when I was a kid, but I don't remember it.

13. Nuestra Senora de la Soledad (Soledad): Never visited.

14. San Jose de Guadalupe (San Jose): Never visited.

15. Mission San Juan Bautista (San Juan Bautista): I think I may have visited as a kid. This is the mission I made out of sugar cubes when I was in 4th grade (all 4th graders in California have to do a Mission project).

16. San Miguel Arcangel (San Miguel): Never visited.

17. San Fernando Rey de Espana (San Fernando): Never visited.

18. San Luis Rey de Francia (Oceanside): Never visited.

19. Santa Ines (Solvang): Solvang is a fun little town to visit, and if you're there, you should go to the mission. We enjoyed it.

20. San Rafael Arcangel (San Rafael): Never visited.

21. San Francisco de Solano (Sonoma): Never visited.

Well, after going through all these missions, I realize I should visit some of the ones I haven't been too. Afterall, these are some of the oldest and most historic sites we have in California.
