On the day I went to the Garden District of New Orleans, my husband was at a conference. So I walked down the street from our hotel, and caught the trolley. The trolley ride itself was a lot of fun, and you get to see a lot of the beautiful Greek Revival, Second Empire, and Italianate houses as you enter the district.
I was dropped off at the stop for Lafayette Cemetary No. 1 where I took a tour through the Save Our Cemetaries organization. Our tour guide did a wonderful job of explaining the history, tales of the people entombed there, and why no burials take place (flooding, high water table). I even sat with her under a tree for awhile and talked after the tour was over. I joined Save Our Cemetaries after I got back home. www.saveourcemetaries.org
Commander's Palace is just across the street, but rather than go to the icon of "Nawlins" food, I went down the street to the Garden District Bookshop and had lunch at the cafe. Just a sandwich and iced tea.
After that I started the long walk back to the French Quarter. I walked by so many big, beautiful houses. Many were being refurbished. I walked down Magazine Street and went into a shop or two. After a little break at a cafe for some refreshing watermelon juice, I made it through the intese heat back to the hotel.
