Rome (World)
Entry 47 of 57 | show all | print this entry |
My first steps into Rome tooke me to a line, a very long line, after standing around for an hour waiting for our luggage. We inched slowly up, to give descriptions of our two missing bags. Thanks to the brand new (opening day!) Terminal 5 at Heathrow in London, no one on our plane had luggage to take with them.
Because of this, our arrival out into the Eternal City was very delayed. By the time we took the train into the city center, it was late, dark and also raining. We had time to check into our hotel, and then have dinner across the street.
The next morning, we had to take a train to Viareggio, a northern beach town for business. I caught glimpses of Rome as we headed out of town.
When we got back from Viareggio, it was time to take in some sights. We walked around the Colisseum--but decided not to wait in the long line to get inside; we would do that when we come back with our kids. It was amazing, though, to see the nearly 2,000 year old icon of Rome.
We were able to see the Pantheon on numerious occasions, including sitting at a table having dinner in its square (Piazza della Rotunda) where we could gaze upon it as much as we wanted.
Our hotel van dropped us off at the Spanish Steps each day. We had a beautiful view our first day there, with sun beginning to set.
I think no trip to Rome would be complete without seeing Trevi Fountain. We enjoyed tossing our coins into the water over our shoulders to insure our return to Rome.
Our visit to Vatican City was faster than I would have liked, but St. Peter's Square is a wonder to see, and St. Peter's Basilica is just fascinating--the opulence! We did not have time to go to the museum or Sistine Chapel. Next time.
We enjoyed our time in Rome and can't wait to go back.
