I got to visit the island of Oahu with a friend of mine; our parents sent us as a graduation present in 1986. I had just turned 18 (egads, did I just date myself?)! We flew from San Francisco, and I think it was my first commercial airplane flight.

We had a wonderful time. We sunned ourselves on Waikiki Beach and played in the warm, warm water. Being from Northern California, I had never experienced warm, clear ocean water before! We shopped and bought the ubiquitous pooka shell necklaces and bikinis at Hilo Hattie's.

We toured the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, and had someone take our picture with a cute Navy guy who had a broken leg. We immersed ourselves in all things Hawaiian at the Polynesian Cultural Center, and drank Mai Tai's and ate pork and poi at a traditional luau.

In the evenings, we partied the night away at a place called Spats, dancing and mingling. We also took a dinner cruise that was a lot of food and a lot of fun. Oh, yeah, and a we went to a Chippendale Review too, lol.

For two 18-year olds fresh out of high school, we did pretty well.
