"Symbol of a Country's Division and Unification"

The first time I saw Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor) was on our way to a conference dinner over in East Berlin. We drove by it. It was all lit up, and quite pretty. Over the next couple of days in Berlin, I got to see a couple more times, this time walking by it and under it.

I learned about it while taking a walking tour of Berlin, most of which was on the East Berlin side. Although it was built as a "Gate of Peace" in the 1700's, it became a symbol of the Cold War, as a part of the Berlin Wall.
