Where I stayed

DH, the kids, grandma and grandpa, and I stayed at the Hotel Del a few years ago so DH could attend a conference. At the time, we lived in San Diego, so really he could have commuted from home, but we thought it was a great opportunity to stay at this historic hotel.

It's really beautiful, and the lobby just reeks of history and stateliness. We had a wonderful time there playing on the white-sand beach, having drinks by the pool, and eating in the wonderful restaurants there (including the magnificent Crown Room).

They have a great kids' program; DD and SS got to do some fun activities with other kids. And we all got to watch a family movie poolside.

Besides being old and historic, the hotel is known for hosting presidents and celebrities, being the setting for "Some Like It Hot," and for being the inspiration for L. Frank Baum's Wizard of Oz. In fact, one t.v. channel at the hotel is devoted to playing the movie 'round the clock.

Side note: For some reason, the author also includes the San Diego Zoo with her section on the Hotel Del. Certainly the zoo is well worth a visit--we always had passes and would make trips out to see the animals regularly (to the zoo and the Wild Animal Park). However, the two places (Hotel Del and the zoo) do not really "go" together; I guess it was another chance for her to add in more places without increasing her count of 1000.
