We went through Death Valley on our way driving from Las Vegas to Mammoth. We stopped in Death Valley to have lunch at the Furnace Creek Inn, which is the hotel mentioned in the book. It is a beautiful property, and we had a very nice, relaxing lunch there. We also walked around the very pretty grounds, which was more green than I would have expected.

Near this area we had stopped the car to look around at the landscape; we were by a ravine. We could all of a sudden hear a rumble, and we turned around to see a fighter jet speeding up and out of the ravine as it passed us. That was quite exciting.

I was surprised at how pretty Death Valley is, but then, I went there in the winter time. I might have a different opinion if I went there in the summer and it was 120 degrees F!
