A week has gone by and I'm still trying to deal with out of control foam as I make my way through the various bottles of beer I purchased at the market. As luck would have it, however, Military.com which e-mails me regularly, featured an article in the latest mailing titled,
"Beer and Fitness?"
Can it Be?" Now isn't this right out of a fairy tale?
To summarize "..... moderate beer consumption is actually healthy." Unfortunately, the "...average can of beer has over 100 calories. Drinking one beer is the equivalent to eating a chocolate chip cookie." Downing 4 is equal to a Big Mac Hamburger. This new information backs up the very advice that the young woman working the desk (what can I say, I didn't get my own bottle opener until last night) has been trying to explain to me
Pursuing my new quest to sample and understand the best beers of the world, I double clicked on a recommended website in former Navy SEAL Stew Smith's article which led me to
THE U.S. BEER DRINKING TEAM website. "The first real team for the Beer 'Lifestyle' Community."
I began to think I was really on to something as I downed another swig of Lederer Premium Pils. What is the "Beer Lifestyle" I pondered? I read on and soon discovered the mantra. It is pretty simple. It's the camaraderie experienced when having the best beer on your best day with your best buds.
It's not about the beer.
It's about the experience.
So tonight Rick, Chuck and I are meeting for dinner at La Fiamme which just might be the beginning in our attempt to qualify for the U.S. BEER DRINKING TEAM. Move over American Idol! I'll keep you posted as to our progress.
When I'm not working or sampling German beer, I'm looking into the origin of the doner. This Turkish sandwich is offered here on base although I hear there are better examples around town. I have also consumed some very good Leberwurst which carried my thoughts back to liver sausage of my childhood which was spread on slabs of bread served with pickles and mustard. I still can't quite figure out Alpen-Kaffeesahne. It bears some resemblance to Pet or Carnation Evaporated Milk but isn't even a distant relative of Coffee Cream. I have also sampled a pastry that looks like a punchke (spell check where are you?) and is filled with every imaginable cream flavored center. YMMMMMMM.
This week end I'm back on the road.

Someone must comment!
I guess it will be me. I did my best to taste all the bier in Franconia when I taught in Bamberg. The Rouchbier was too smokey for me. Every town had their own brewery, even the the dorf of Truinstadt of 1500 people had a brewery. The best beer was the one closest at hand. After playing a couple of hour of volleyball at the sportvereim we had to have a 'radeler maas' (a one liter krug of half bier and half 7-up). then we could drink it full strength.
The white wines of Franconia are also very good!

I will write ya Jim!
Jim:
Great to hear everything is going well on your most recent trip. You are not missing anything here in Waterford but very cold temps and high wind. Continue to have a great trip and we'll see you when to return!
Sincerely,
