hi all
here we are again, back from our day trip at famagusta.........what a interesting day it was.
we got picked up at 8.30am and off we went passports ready for our crossing of the border into tukey occupied cyprus. as we were approaching the border on a very average road, we were told to look left and right of the bus as there were active mine fields along side our bus. we had arrived at the border, and our customs officer jumped on the bus to keep an eye on us to make sure we didnt bring anything back illegally.
we got to our first stop off, and to our shock, michaels fault of course i left the battery of the camera at home, so our stop off of the ruins has no pictures to show. im sorry!!! but after this i went and purchased a disposable camera................argh so we will have some photos to put on in the next day or two. we got off the bus again and had a look around the town of famagusta, very pretty ( the city that is ) lovely cafes and nice people. we got to have a look at the old wall that surrounds the city , at parts 17 feet wide - no penatrating it i guess and from there we went to our last stop of the day. the beach, however along this beach there were blown up hotels, barb wired fances that run into the water, armed soldiers and flags that made sure everyone knew it was turkeys land. should mention why this is like that. back in the 70's cyprus was occupied by cypriots, however there was an attack on cyprus when they where at a vulnerable political stage and turkey got in and blew up the coast of famagusta. still to this day the hotels, homes and streets remain devastated by bullets and randsacking and it is now fenced off and is known as the ' ghost city '
its sad to think that cyprus is a westernised country yet once you cross the border, its like your in a third world country, and thats sad that people have to live like this in the world we live in.
on that note we are off

Comments
onwards
Hi there,
finally got on internet that works. Waiting for bus to go to next hotel. Do you remember how hot it gets - we are sweating under a fan. So far dad is better and ready to go elephant trekking and more snorkelling. I was stung by a wasp. Big deal says dad. Love your photos and the news - and also the adventures of Holly! Your family make great comments and make us laugh, Michael. Got to go, bus here. Love mum and dad.
another day in Ko Samui
Ten o'clock at night and we have just got back from the main street of Ko Samui - like Kuta may have been like 30 years ago. Spent day at beach; tomorrow off to another beach some way away, followed by a night of Thai kickboxing. Saw the Grand final at an Irish pob with about 80 Geelong supporters! See you soon. Love to you both - and hello to all of Michael's family.
