Where I stayed
My plan for today was to sink into the rhythm of the locals and wake up as late as possible. I woke up totally refreshed and energized at around 8am. Since I arrived so late last night, I went over to meet my hosts, Sharr and Terry, who live in the house right next door. They are what you call big time surfers who have lived in Belize and other places where the surfing is good. They are the total image of the laid back surfer. They are from South Africa. We chat for a bit and I quickly realize that my place is going to be a very basic existence. No modern features. Just simple. Just what I was looking for on this trip. I am about 300 yards from the beach and the motto here seems to be wake up, eat, surf, sleep, surf, drink, sleep.....and repeat. I am basically in the jungle about 300 yards from the beach. There are dozens of different pathways where one turn can take you in a totally different direction
I finally make my way down to the beach for the first time and it is pretty unbelievable. Just picture the island from Lost where they were all camped out on the beach and that is pretty much it. It is just the place I was looking for to get off the grid for 8 days.
I meet up with Michelle and Mary, two girls from Boston who surf, believe it or not. We strike up a fast friendship and one of them is looking for a place to stay in my area beginning on Wed. I take them and show them the location and the small town I am in, so it looks like I will know someone else in the area when Wed. comes around.
Tonight, I am invited to a BBQ that the locals are having. After about 10 wrong turns down winding roads, I make it to the BBQ about 40 minutes late. We are on Costa Rica time, so we are nowhere close to even eating. I run into 2 girls I met from Germany the night before, a guy from New Mexico and another girl from Canada. They invite me to join them and we have a great dinner with interesting conversation about their travels all over the world. The German girls are currently working at a hotel in the area to pay for their stay in Costa Rica.
