The stars were definately shining on us for our travels between Peru and Bolivia. We had a 5 hour trip from Arequipa to Puno. On the way we came through a town called Juliaca. Well if ever you get out this way, give this place a skip. What a dump. Even the guidebook description makes the place sound scary, it is apparenty a hub for contraband.
Puno looked pretty dire too. Our bus arrived an hour late and Gareth and I headed off into the terminal to try and get tickets for a bus to take us straight over the boarder in Bolivia and onto Copacabanna. The bus that does this route was running late and we managed to get the last 4 tickets. We sprinted back to help the girls with our bags and rush over to the next bus.
The boarder crossing was painless and the trip to Copacabanna was another 3 hours
Copacabanna was a releif after seening Puno and Juliaca... The Bolivian people are also friendly and the ladies all dress the same way the peruvians do. The array of bowler hats and layers and layers of skirts dont seem strange anymore... we have taken some photos as the really make the place.
The lake is huge and being at 3900M above sea level is hard on the lungs. Even though we are pretty fit a few flights of stairs too fast and you find yourself panting for minutes!
We chill out the first day as we are all a little jaded and need some space and time to recover. The last 20 days have been action packed and a days recouperation is well received.
Next day we got on a full days trip out to Isla De Sol (or Island of the Sun) Th boat trip is slow but gives us time to sit on the top deck and cacth some sun and get a feel for this great lake. The colours are so blue. We get dropped at the one side of the Island and have several hours to take in some ruins at the north and then make our way south over 8km of ups and downs with pectacular views of the lake..
We stop for a quick bite of Lunch which takes about an hour and means that we sprint the last 40 minutes down through the town in the South and make the boat back by the skin of our teeth. There were several slow dutch people who missed the boat. Not a bad thing as I am sure there were more. If we had known that the town was so pretty on the island (much nicer than Copacabana) we would have planned to spend a night there.
On the way back we get talking with an English lady who is a dive instrtuctor. She and her husband have done some awesome things and we discuss many good dive sites around the world which we will need to get too on the second leg of our trip.
Back in Copacabanna we have an awesome meal at a German run Hotel called La Cupola which is on the hill.
Bolivia is a lot cheaper than the other countries we have visted so far which is great news.
Next stop La Paz.. The highest Capital city in the world!
