Friday, Jan 29

So we got up at Casa Brians (for those of us who slept :P ) and had some of the delicious breakfast of fresh fruit, beans and rice and toast that he made for us. Ohhh also had my first cup of coffee in CR and it was great! The shuttle arrived and we started to put our things in. The driver noticed that Josh had a surfboard and said we couldnt bring it because we were supposed to tell them if we had boards. Let`s think of this now...we are shuttling to the biggest surf town in CR and its our responsibility to tell you we have a surf board? Shouldnt that be a question you ask at booking? It would have fit just fine if they hadnt booked 6 other people in our *private* shuttle. We had a long convo with the office and they ended up sending us a cab to drive us to Mal Pais. We thought that was sweet because we would get our own car. `So here`s where being the girl sucks...I had to sit in the middle seat of a toyota corolla for 5 hours and it was absolutely miserable. I was looking forward to sleeping on the ride but didnt get one wink. It wasnt really that big of a deal because the driver was going so fast and swerving so much to miss pot holes that I dont think I could have slept even if I was comfortable enough to do so.

We arrived in Mal Pais & Santa Teresa (theyre separated by a fork in the road and are about 5 minutes apart) and got our cabby to bring us to Tranquilo Backpackers which is a place Brandon had recommended to us. It turned out they were completely full and so was every other cheap hostel in town because of the Manifesto Gathering (a big hippie gathering with lots of beach parties) so we ended up at the Mal Pais surf club. The only thing they had available was a villa that overlooked the pool. It was a little out of our budget...30$ each for a night (so 60 for james and I) but we had no other option besides sleeping on the beach. We went to our little villa (its the top floor of a house) and it was amazing! It had 2 double and 2 single beds with a private bathroom and a view of the pool. Well worth the money! We spent the night drinking dirty costa rican rum that we got for 8$ a bottle and playing cards in our room with Josh and Geoff. The guys really wanted to go out but I wasnt comfortable because I hadnt gotten to check out the town before dark so James and I hung back at the hostel while the guys went out. It was another relaxing night after a long drive!

I`d write more but the bugs are eating me!! at least the pics are up for you to see...our first full day in mal pais!
