Kigali is a beautiful city nestled among magnificent hills/ mountains? The city centre has changed since I was last here 3 years ago - there are fewer idlers on the streets, more buildings have gone up, and the network of roads has expanded. Coming from Uganda, I can never get over how good Rwandese roads are - no potholes! Maybe it is because they have fewer vehicles?
My sister lives in a relatively posh area. Her house is beautiful, huge with staff - security guards, maid and nanny. For a working class Londoner - sheer luxury!
On Sunday I attended communion service at an English speaking church. I always feel at home in Pentecostal churches. There is a strong sense of family here and the songs were familiar. We had to leave service early to head out to Kibuye and see beautiful Crater Lake Kivu, however the omens were against us, and decided to go another day. After lunch, I went to help out with the Kids Club. With great apprehension I faced this gang of frankly scary kids who were eying me up with more than just curiosity- as if sizing me up for the kill. Somehow I got through playing the guitar and retreated to a safe corner, body language screaming STAY AWAY FROM ME!!! But kids don't speak "body language" and very soon started circling around me. Fortunately, my nephew and niece laid claim to me and kept the rest of the 'vultures' at bay! Those two!! They've been waking me up every morning at about 6.00pm to wish me "good morning". Even a locked door does not deter them. They bang loudly on it, shouting "Auntie Kim... open the door, open, open". Part of the waking up routine is entertainment. This morning's was a 'puppet' show - a really long one. Too long for sleepy Aunty Kim who was "not paying attention" .
