Talk about needing coffee! We left Hue yesterday at 3:45 in the afternoon, arrived in Hanoi via night train at 6:30am (night does not translate to sleep!!), dropped our bags at a hotel, took an overnight bag and boarded a bus for Halong Bay. 4 hours later - the ocean is in sight - Finally! I guess the Vietnamiese way to leave the port is to push your way out. Our boat must have rammed atleast 4 other boats, multiple times, until it made itself a clearing to get into the bay! And you wonder why boats go under...
It was a really nice cruise around the bay. We had an abundant amount of food served to us while we watched the huge limestone, moss covered mountains as we passed by. We had the boat to ourselves for the entire afternoon, so we spent some time eating, drinking, sleeping, playing card games and of course, enjoying the view of the bay around us. We stopped in a few bays and even hopped off and explored a cathedral style cave system
At the end of it all, we found a whole in the wall restaurant for dinner - mostly due to the fact that we were to lazy to look for anything else! But, I give mom credit. I think she may win the world record for most consecutive meals consisting solely of fried rice! She was occasionally risky with her food choices, but had not developed the iron stomach that I had with all my travels! Most people over the last month had taken their turns getting sick.. So far so good for me! It'll be my luck I'll get sick in Hawaii or some place normal. :)
For most it was an early evening, sleep deprivation was setting in. The boys (oskar, gustov, terry) and I headed out for awhile - but it was a quiet town. Our hotel was away from other touristy areas. As Terry commented, we were like goldfish stuck in a bowl - everyone was peering at us in a peculiar way. So it was a short night.
