My time in this country just keeps getting more and more unusual. I turned down the opportunity to hop on the back of one the families scooters and ride through the canyons around Goreme, so I could walk to the open air museum, enjoy some tea in a cafe and shop the fruit markets. All seems rather normal. Instead, I some how ended up spending two hours in an internet cafe with 3 local farmers that spoke zero english, a young guy that spoke a little - helping them write an ad, in English, for the Turkish newspaper, to sell Bat shit. No, not fertilizer - that would mean it was processed a little (i learned more than I want to know about the process) - but pure cave piles of bat two. In all honesty, it was highly amusing. And along the way I was brought every flavor of tea and cookie I could imagine. And at the end of it all, they wanted to buy me dinner to say thank you - so the lone speaker of the group was my escort. This is where it gets even better. I have a few hours to kill before dinner - so I shop (great tapestries) and stop by the restaurant to say hello to the family from the night before
Above Goreme
. The two brothers are there - when I begin to explain my afternoon. In true Turkish form, they become overly protective and start asking 20 questions about who what when where for my "dinner" tonight. No matter how I explained it was nooothing, just a thank you, they were skeptical. Keeping in mind, the whole village was about two streets wide - atleast where any restaurants were concerned. How far could I go? Sure enough, 20 minutes after I meet for dinner - older brother just HAPPENS to be walking by - and comes on in, grabs a seat to catch up and say hello. amazing really. Anyway - simple dinner and I headed out with a group of people for a drink - to one of the two bars in town. Of course, everyone I met over the last two days was there...it's a funny feeling to have someone keeping on eye on you as if you were blood, after one day of knowing me! But, nice none the less. A couple of games of backgammon in the cave bar, and only a few minutes after the dancing started, I knew it was time for me to get to bed.
