Lima is definitely unlike any other city I've visited. I'm staying in a hotel in the Centro - downtown area. It's not the prettiest of areas. It's very run down, lots of shanty's mixed in with beautiful baroque churches. I knew tourism was slow when I was waiting in a Fransican Monestary and a group of jr. high school students on a history field trip were more intrigued by me, than the Monestary. After a 10 minute conversation in half English, half Spanish, I had 25 new friends that all wanted to know if they could be my e-mail friend. I spent the day walking the downtown region, visiting churches, catacombs, the occasional protest and churro stand, and of course - shoe store. It's rather annoying actually, everything is SOO inexpensive (I bought a winter jacket because it's MUCH colder than I expected for 25 soles, or just under $8 US) and I can't buy anything! I'm sitting on my backpack already, never mind that it weighs more than I do.

Last night a friend, Joanna, that I have been communicating with over email that lives here in Lima came to pick me up and show me the city. Lima has many faces! MiraFlores and the Barranca areas are beautiful. They drove me all over the city, stopping at important sites. I couldn't have asked for a better guide! We stopped at few bars for some Peruvian beer - where they continued to warn me how difficult the hike is I'm about to start on Monday! Later that night we ended up at a discotheque in Barranca, El Dragon. We danced, had a few more drinks and got home around 3...personally, I couldn't have asked for a better first day/night on my trip!

Fun!
Hey Kim, Looks like you are off to a great start. Hopefully you will have web access throughout your trip. This will be so educational and so much fun for us and the kids to follow! Be safe, take care and am looking forward to see how your 'hike' went. Love, Aunt Nanc
