what a weekend.

after the run-in with hungarian police and being momentarily detained in hegyeshalom yesterday, paloma and i decided to try our luck travelling around austria. last night we stopped in vienna for dinner on the way back to salzburg, had some tasty torte and coffee and finally got home around 4am. after a zippy 5 hours of sleep we were back out on the road and ready to take on austria!

we decided to head to this town called mondsee - which means "moon lake" - because, well you guessed it, the lake is shaped like a moon. the day started off nice without a single cloud in the sky - and after our hour-long bus ride we parked it a beach and snoozed in the sun. it was great. then, after we got a little toasty, we went to st. michael's church, which is where maria and cpt. von trapp get married in sound of music. i only took a picture of the outside because they are restoring the inside, but it was still beautiful. another short hike up a "hillock" and we were at something called the rachhaus, which was a house where multiple generations of farmer peasant people lived from 1470-1950 and then it was turned into a museum. everything was in german, so i didn't get everything out of the experience as possible, but it was old and rustic and up on a hill. apparently the farmer people used to smoke corn and meat up there. so yeah.

and then - it started raining. and raining. and then i thought the sky was going to fall down. we were sitting at the bus stop in our flippies and swimsuits and getting absolutely soaked. i just looked over at paloma, and gave her more crap for forgetting her passport. we just got back to salzburg and i think we'll hang out here for the day and then take another day trip to hallstat (where the salt mines are) tomorrow!
