Today we went for a day trip to the city of Pompeii. It was destroyed and hidden by an explosion from Mt Vesuvious in 79AD which killed everybody left in the town an surrounding area. The began excavating it back in the 1700's and now the whole town has been dug out and you can walk around it. Because it was a gas and ash explosion, not a lava one, some buildings are still intact and they found peoples bodies, sealed my the ash, almost 2000 years later. We saw gladiator training areas, grafitti and election slogans from just before the eruption, temples, bakeries, take away stores and the biggest house in town. There were paintings on the walls in some houses that were decorations of that time. There were also mosaic floors. I saw some plaster casts that had been made from the people who were found when the town was excavated. you could really imagine what it would have been like as a bustling town and some of the ideas they had for bringing water into the city and cooking were really advanced. It was a little bit nerve wracking though, seeing Mt Vesuvious looming in the background all day...
