Townsville
Entry 73 of 117 | show all | print this entry |
The drive from Mission Beach to Townsville was again beautiful. We stopped for an amazing view of the rainforest and Magnetic Island at McClelland's lookout, and then headed via a series of very enjoyable hair-pin bends and a delightful dirt track to Wallaman Falls. At 278kms this is Australia's longest single drop waterfall, and it is amazing. Arriving into the car park at the top of the drop it was hard to believe the waterfall behaved like that constantly. We walked down, through the rainforest, to the bottom and back up to the top again. Much easier said than done, but well worth it! The day in Townsville started at Reef HQ, a very impressive living coral reef aquarium. We meet again with many of the Great Barrier Reef's fish, and a extremely ugly sea snake, which I very happy we missed out on. We were lucky enough to see some newborn seahorses, stingrays, and clownfish (Nemo's!) Amazing miniscule versions of the adult things! We walked along the very pleasant Strand to the rock pool, but having just learnt about the almost instantly deadly (potentially present) box jellyfish, which are helpfully the size of a fingernail, and see through, we declined a dip.
