Despite the fact that the overnight train was delayed by over 2 hours due to snow, we have now arrived safely in Nanjing having encountered the world and his wife on the local bus from the station.

Time to explore!

Exploration was slow to say the least. The traffic was disgustingly bad - buses a physical nightmare, taxis unobtainable and the tube simply one line running north to south with the stations impossible to find!

The temple dedicated to Confucius at the heart of city had been totally overriden with decorations for Chinese New Year.- it was garish tack at its very best!

On the second attempt we managed to get part way up Purple Mountain to the UNESCO Ming Tomb. The mountain, towering above the Nanjing skyline was thick with snow which meant the cable car wasn't running!? (What happen's at ski resorts!?!) With so much to see at this famous tourist site affected by the weather, Nanjing was frustrating us. Luckily we enjoyed some great meals, particularly at an unassuming back street Chinese restaurant which served delicious home-cooked dishes, where at the end of our second visit the owner presented us with a pair of bracelets as a gift- we now feel like real funky travellers!
