We took a pre-paid taxi from the airport up the coast about 70k to Varkala. The resort is strung out along the coast and there are several bays. The first section of beach, the temple end, is very Indian, with lots of people going in the sea fully clothed, mainly men but also a few women in saris. There are also some saddhus (holy men)on the beach with fires burning, all very spiritual. Then there is a big section of Westerners roasting themselves on sun loungers with groups of Indian men standing around to oggle! The main drag of backpackers places is on the cliff top above this section of beach. Plenty of bars, restaurants & shops. Every other place is Ayervedic & does Yoga or massage or some sort of treatment.
After a bit of searching we've got a great room with our own balcony and sea views at Odayam beach which is the quietest end. We've also got use of the kitchen if we want to do our own food. We've got a little bay just a few minutes walk away which doesn't get very busy at all. The sea is pretty choppy with grt crashing waves to knock you off your feet if you're not careful but it's beautiful.
We ventured into Varkala town today which is a short rickshaw ride away and posted a parcel back home. My new Art sandles may look very funky and everything but they were cutting my feet to shreds and had to go a buy a pair of trusted Crocs! So a parcel, all lovingly stitched at the tailors, is winging it's way home to Richard as I write.
So this'll do us then for a few more days.
