It is beyond ridiculous; why would my University be so kind yet so cruel, sending me to paradise and expecting me to write a research project in the process?! And on that note, I'll take this opportunity to express my feelings towards the stupid fact that they send us away in our third year instead of our fourth, encouraging us to fully immerse ourselves into the culture, living a completely different life whilst falling in love with the people and the country... then expect us to happily return without a fight... oh life. So rewarding, yet so painful at the same time.
A lot of my friends have told me that they are secretly happy that I am slightly hating life right now, and I don't blame you. I should have started this in October, but I only began to really pay attention after returning from Los Cabos, so I gave myself a solid 3 weeks to start, process and finish this bitch. Statistics are out of the way at least, and I can see the finish line!
Wow the second dive, Gran Pin, was the most exciting dive I have done so far! I was practically crying the whole way through, it was incredible! We saw lots of baby eels and one giant eel hiding away, as well as the intruder of the Cancun reefs, the Lion Fish! Which was cool to see. However, what got to me was the reef itself, it was just so bright and colourful! So beautiful, and the coral formations allowed us to get up close and personal as we glided through the tiny holes, caves and narrow passage ways with little baby eels popping their heads out for company :) As Maira swam towards the first tiny tunnel-like hole within the coral formation, I was thinking "naaah no way" but then she went through and, ahhh, it was such a thrill, it was just so exciting! I know I probably sound really lame, but you have to experience it to understand/appreciate it, for me, it was incredible! I was blown away! Felt like Nemo haha!
I'm trying to think of anything else that has happened the last couple of weeks... Ah yes, basketball. I've only had 2 matches since returning from the Easter break, and they were terrible. I have a really bad attitude sometimes, and it is so frustrating, but I just can't seem to shake it :( I let my head go down really badly if I make a mistake, when I know I shouldn't, it's normal, people make mistakes... but there ya go, that's me. Need to change to stop letting my team down.
Oh and the girls on the other team CONTINUE to hate me, despite the fact that I honestly have done nothing wrong; I don't play dirty, I don't wind them up, nothing! Nowadays it doesn't bother me, at first it might have got to me, but it's now just funny that I have a LOT of haters on the court, but I've also got my trusty supporters on the sideline who cheer on the wuera (white chick)... even if they are mainly old men, I appreciate them! What I don't appreciate is when the coach of the other team hits on me in the middle of the game, in front of his team, and in front of everyone watching. Disgusting and so embarrassing! Ew, gives me the shivers thinking about it. Basically, in basketball you have to give the ball to the ref before you can inbound it to resume play, but their coach was holding the ball while I was waiting for it, but he wasn't giving it to the ref... he was creepily staring at me. He held up the game for a good 5 minutes whilst coming too close to my face saying puras mamadas (pure bullshit) ... with talk about giving me a present, and that the ball was the first of many presents he was going to give me for my white girl beauty. Ew it/he was vile. When I was telling my friends about it who weren't there, they immediately knew who I was talking about... a bit of a reputation Put. Haha. Oh, also I had lost my fitness majorly, so I have just restarted my Insanity workouts in my room! Killer, but I have put on weight since Christmas and I do not want to make a return to fat farm/chubster's camp that's for sure!
A little bit of a scare recently in Cancun with a lot of news regarding Narcos, executions, shootings and decapitations, with a decapitated head found in the next Supermanzana. Pretty scary stuff for me, especially as there was a shoot out in one of the Plazas (shopping centres) I often go to, as the police detained the head (jefe) of the Cartel del Golfo. Other news includes random shootings at a bar, 7 dead taximen and other nasty stuff. My beloved Cancun! These things happen under the radar without hearing much about it, but the newspapers here have no problem with publishing photos of decapitated heads on the front pages. Really gruesome, no limits. So i'm being a little bit more cautious, especially at night. My Mexican friend reassures me though (translation) "didn't you know? It happens all the time (decapitations) it is fine! They always chop off their arms and heads! Don't worry it is fine, just don't go near the Narcos" ... thing is, up until recently all of this was happening on the outskirts of Cancun, now it is well and truly in the centre! Down the road in fact! Stay safe everyone!
So to sum up this lackluster blog, I have been spending most of my days in the SAC giving conversations, then in the library working on my thesis. So sad. I think I've only been to the beach once waaah. Although I have made time to make trips to the Cinema of course, and a student kindly gave me coupons to go for free which was so nice of him! I've also been spending some "quality time" with friends in between work/thesis... so it's not all bad :)
Oh and this Mexico blog passed the 2000 view mark the other week, which was pretty exciting for me, again lame, but I do really appreciate it that people are reading these from time to time and I love catching up with people from back home too :) So yeh, big thanks again!
My mum made me weep a little the other day for the first time, aww she does miss me, her "babo," so here is your shoutout, and also to my dad who I know (from his facebook cover photos...) is missing me too and is so proud :') I don't deserve them, but I miss you both a lot too!
Also, other preeeetty exciting news: my two favourite Michelles are coming to Cancun!! One crazy, mad chick called Shellbo from down under in Australia is coming so soon, who I haven't seen in almost 2 looooong years, and then Michelle from Denmark! OH YEH! Amazing! You meet the best people travelling eh?
Anyway, I guess this blog was more of a, hey don't forget about me, thing... :) Until something more interesting... Kim x
