My Southampton friends are visiting from Puebla, Mexico City and Queretaro and so some hadn't seen a beach yet, hence why we decided to spend Christmas here in Cancun, and so our first stop was to my favourite place, the beach. As always, it didn't disappoint, and it was beautiful! In the evening we all went to the Irish Pub with other friends from our residential to enjoy Ladie's night and the same playlist that we have heard every Thursday night which involves all the favourites as well a Salsa tunes and the Mexican line dancing. Friday 21st-
The weather wasn't that great for Cancun standards so we decided to hit the Hotel Zone anyway an explore the pretty shopping centre which is situated by the lagoon After taking a couple of pictures with the massive shark, we decided to check out the Aquarium. Here we saw lots of fish, turtles, dolphins, sharks and we were allowed to feel the stingrays. This is the first time I've been brave enough to do this... my family can back me up on this one, because when we went to Stingray City in Grand Caymen I was absolutely terrified of them, screaming and swimming away. Now I'm scuba diving with them and touching them :D After seeing the sharks (Nursing, Lemon, Bull, Black tip reef) swimming in the tank, we decided on the spot to get in the tank with them... behind a plastic door. Sort of like cage diving, but plastic, in an Aquarium. Still pretty cool.
Afterwards we ate some food in Parque las Palapas and we all made multiple trips back to the row of food stalls for more tasty Mexican food. Then we took them to experience a stanard Friday night in Sweet :)
Spent the day at the beach in Playa del Carmen and walking along Quinta Avenida to buy our Secret Santa presents... how cute. We then returned to Cancun to watch The Hobbit, and after a certain incident, I was unable to concentrate on the LONG film so by the end I couldn't really appreciate it... The film finished at midnight and I decided to go for "one drink" with two friends. This one drink, turned into one whisky on the road, one trip to the antro until closing, one bottle of vodka and other concoctions I can't even remember being served. All this, and I was still dressed in my beach clothes (nike shorts and bikini) looking like absolute shit after long bus rides and the long film, brilliant. I would love to fill you in on everything that happened this night, but this was the most drunk I have been my entire time here. I ended up returning to my house with Maryanna around 9am, to find Jodie getting in the shower... I was so confused, and trying to sleep but then realised that everyone was ready to go on our planned trip to Isla Mujeres, and I was still absolutely smashed, giggling with no sleep... fan-tastic. Sun 23rd-
I joined the Southampton group on our trip to Isla Mujeres, and I honestly can't remember half of the things that happened this morning. I was an absolute state, and my legs were disgusting, covered in trails of vodka and cranberry, highlighting the tragic-ness of my life. I was dying. If you have seen the couple of photos on facebook you will be able to agree with me, I'm surprised I didn't fall off the boat! As you could probably guess, I wasn't particularly great company this day, still drunk during the start, and then to come crashing down with tiredness. Ideal when you are snorkelling off a tiny boat. Can't really say much about today as I was feeling very sorry for myself. I DO remember holding a cat shark called Pancho though, but it was really sad because he had a tiny enclosure in the sea to swim around :( Mon 24th-
We spent the day chilling on the beach in Cancun and then it was time for Bahía Azul's nochebuena, Christmas Eve BBQ. This was very cute but we had to wait until midnight until we started eating, truly Mexican style Christmas ;) It was a hilarious night with a massive food fight started by Vicky, who was therefore nicknamed "Pinche Vicky" by the Mexicans. Classic. Jodie ended up being the main target, and was covered head to toe in the cucumber Josh spent hours chopping. So funny. Vicky ended up on the table to get better aim, with everyone chanting Pince Vicky. Jodie decided to take a break in one of the hammocks we have in our garden, and we were all having a bit of fun when we decided to wrap her up and start spinning her around. Hysterical laughter turned into nervous laughter when, from nowhere, this guy started a firework and put it right under her hammock... none of us had a clue what was going on, but for me, the fact that it was Jodie, it was hilarious. Slowly things were getting taken further and further until the same guy started another firework, but this time the laughter was cut short when we heard "IT FUCKING HIT ME KIM! IT HIT ME!" In the voice from her 21st birthday when she was imitating her mum. Oh god, SO funny. She has a pretty nasty bruise on her back from it though. Merry Christmas from Mexico. Tues 25th-
Christmas day was spent in Isla Blanca which was beautiful. We started the day with our cute little Secret Santa presents and I was given a ring, a sombrero key ring and the most perfect present for me- a notebook, to continue writing all of my shit down, with a little turtle painting on the cover! Love it! In my attempt at trying to find a sheltered place for us to make our BBQ, I trod on a cactus style plant which left me with needle-ball-like things completely stuck on the soles of my feet, and then I had to fall down to stop putting pressure on my feet, so they then ended up in my bumcheeks too... ouch. Spent a while with a beer in one hand trying to pull them out with the other, painful, yet funny. We then dug our hole for our BBQ and used all of our firelighters up just as the fire started to fail on us... until Gabi the Guetamalan saved Christmas for us, with her BBQ lighting knowledge, wooo. We ate peppers with cheese, rice, potato salad, vegetables, steak with tortillas and this Jamon de Pavo thing which was boom. Beautiful Christmas day, it was so much fun, still didn't feel like Christmas, but it was so cute! Then we hit up Congo which was another good night. Weds 26th-
We spent Boxing Day recovering in Cancun, on the beach of course. Then during the evening, I went for a couple of drinks at Plaza Los Toros (the bull ring) and then somehow didn't make it to Sensations to join the Southampton group, but instead I ended up breaking into the bull ring in the early hours. A motherfucking bull ring! Hilarious, and after my uni days of breaking into the room so often, I wasn't half as scared as my friend. Thurs 27th
- Today we went to a Cenote, which is inbetween Playa del Carmen and Tulum, and it was great. So pretty as usual :) Jumping off the cliff edge and also, after climbing up, some of us braved jumping off the tree. So cool, another good day finished off with Tacos in Playa del Carmen. The Southampton group is split between my house and another house, so we decided to do a Come Dine with Me style competition and the other house cooked up an absolute treat! So tasty! Starter- bruschetta with cherry tomatoes, feta, spinach & jamon serrano. Main was feta cheese, spinach stuffed, jamon serrano wrapped, juicy chicken. Mmmmm :D Dessert was "banoffee mess" served in the American style red cups. Amazing dinner, amazing night. Fri 28th
- Tulum. Tulum just takes my breath away every time. When we arrived, it was boiling hot, and I was so excited for everyone else to see the most beautiful place. Officially the world's best beach, and according to Lonely Planet, the #1 Mexican highlight. I couldn't believe how many tourists there were, get out of my hometown! Eurgh it was horrible, obviously Christmas time, it is peak season and the highlight of Mexico, but I just didn't expect it for some reason. Oh well, this didn't ruin the day, nor the beauty of the place, only the mega long line at the beginning. Everyone was blown away by the colour of the sea, and the ruins situated on the edge of the cliffs... incredible! We went down to the beach just in front of the ruins, and then we spent the rest of the day in another beach further down away from the tourists. Tulum is just perfection.
As you can see I've been so busy this week having an amazing time trying to show the guys from Southampton how great Cancun is... if I haven't had the chance to speak to you properly yet, I was thinking about everyone I've left behind this year and I love you all lots.
I hope you have all had an amazing Christmas with your families and friends, and a very happy new year! X
Last week saw the arrival of 5 new faces to Cancún and the speedy return of Laura :) Bahía Azul has officially been invaded by Southampton students, and the banter has been brilliant.
