All this leads to a much needed 17 day break in Portugal with two of my best friends, full of sun, beaches, laughter and travelling across Portugal.
Today I spent in AJ´s hometown of Aveiro, which has been described as "the Venice of Portugal" and it lives up to its name with beautifully painted boats floating down the river which runs through the centre of Aveiro and its interesting architecture. Buildings, restaurants, hotels and houses all charecteristically of Aveiro and Portugal with bright colours and lots of detail.
My aim of the trip, set by a friend and heavily supported by my parents is that I try at least 10 new things, and/or 10 things I well and truly dislike. I accept my challenge quickly as I followed suit and orderded the same lunch and dinner as AJ. Lunchtime was spent in the food court of the shopping centre right by the river, where we ate a chicken kebab cooked in curry sauce with garlic sauce to boot (I refuse to believe that the white sauce was mayo...) Food item number 1 of my task complete. Good start.
After lunch we continued walking around the town centre of Aveiro walking past all the beautifully coloured buildings, churches, museums and parks. Tempted by the boat rides being offered, but I think we will wait until Michelle arrives for that. I loved the town centre, it really was stunning and the typical cobbled stone streets were free of rubbish.
We then made the short drive to Ilhavo which is 5 minutes outside of Aveiro and is where she lives- an amazing house!
Costa Nova, was next on the list, a beautiful beach and port where her beach house is situated. The row of houses infront of the sea were beautiful with different coloured pin stripes on each house! These can be seen on all of the postcards and magnets which are sold in the tourist shops. After meeting her lovely parents we then walked in front of the house along the sea front seperating Costa Nova from Aveiro and then walked behind the house to find the big sand dunes leading to the incredible beach and sea.
The sun was still shining over the sea by 8pm and I can definitely see myself getting a tan the next two weeks :) By then it was time to go to AJ´s basketball training (how we met in Southampton) in Esguiera which was really interesting to watch their standard of training.
Dinner was late, at 10pm which is normal for the Portuguese and we went to Ramona a burger restaurant where I ordered the favourite on the menu which called the Ramona- a burger with cheese, bacon and ham. It was only €2.75 and it was delicious! We shared a portion of chips with the second of my new foods to try, this sauce which looked like the colour you get when you mix ketchup and mayo... I tried to forget about this fact (for those reading who don't know me particularly well, mayo is a big no-no for me.) Mmmm tasty!
Day 2 and I´m currently at UA while AJ has a quick meeting for her projcet work, and then the rest of the day is ours and the sun is starting to come out from the clouds (eventhough it is still boiling hot today!)
