When Tim told us it was his birthday and his girlfriend Yolana was coming over for a week and they were going south to a tiny beach in little fishing area, we knew it was our duty to go with them to make sure he had a great birthday !!! Hannah and Nicole asked Kumar if he knew any nice cheap hotels down the coast, and he told them about an English guy named Ben who spends every winter in a village called Murud. Ben was in our hotel that night and arranged for us to stay in a little house he rents on the beach which was really cool of him !! Next morning we got a ferry to Allibag then a bus and finally an autorickshaw through first swamps then jungle and finally over a mountain and arrived in Murud at 3pm. When we saw the house we couldnt believe our luck !! Our back garden opened onto the beach which was about 2km long and totally deserted !! Next surprise was theres not enough electricity supply for all the village so you only have electricity for an hour or two each morning and evening and absolutely no phone signal
Next day Jimmy, myself and the girls hired bicycles and travelled up the coast to Janjeera where we got a boat across to Janjeera fortress. Was funny going up (walking mostly) and down all those hills on these bikes that our grandparents would have used !!
Went swimming again that evening, gotanother fish tahli and then played cards and had a few more beers by candlelight back in the house !! On Sat morning Hannah, Tim, Yolana and myself went swimming again and getting a bit braver/ stupid I "forgot" sunscreen and after an hour realised I looked like a lobster !! We left at 3pm and said goodbye to our host Ben and also Tim and Yolana who stayed for couple more days !! Got off ferry in Mumbai again at 8pm and only caught last 5 mins of Liverpool against the "scum" .........wish I didnt though !!
A Ben on boat to Allibag
! Ben took us to a restaraunt where we got really great fish tahli (curry) then it was time for a swim before sunset. There are 2 "bars" in the village so we grabbed a few beers and went back to the house and sat out back until 4am listening to Bens remarkable life story !! He is the most open guy I met and told us everything from his adoption to heroin addiction to spending 4yrs in max security after a guy was killed in his flat to inheriting 2million after his adopted mother died !! Its bizzare the people you spend time with but hear some pretty amazing stories !!Next day Jimmy, myself and the girls hired bicycles and travelled up the coast to Janjeera where we got a boat across to Janjeera fortress.
