We arrived in Dahab on Fri 8th Dec and checked into The Penguin village hostel for ten euros each per night. It was a great location right on the beach we just had to put on our fins and snorkles and walk out our front door and there was the reef right on our doorstep. After a day or two here we knew we would be staying a while because they offer PADI dive courses for a fraction the price of other locations and there is nowhere better to learn to dive than the red sea. In our first couple of days we attempted to windsurf without instruction, and its not as easy as we expected. Its easy to go straight but turning proved to be quite difficult and after numerous falls and one embarrassing rescue by lifeboat (Jimmy) after going to far out to sea we eventually found our feet and cannot recommend windsurfing highly enough. Our next challenge was scuba diving and Jimmy decided to get his PADI cert. I was happy to just do some fun dives. We had to find some cheaper accomodation if we wanted to stay and were lucky to meet a great French guy named Semy from Lille who was staying at 7 heaven hostel who told us it was 1.30 euros per night there so we moved in
We met some great people here like the guys already mentioned.......Semy, Bene and Vadim. We also came across the first Irish people so far on our trip......Ryan and Gareth from Belfast. Two funnier, sounder guys you will never find, we shared a few beers (and sunrises) with these guys and look forward to meeting them in Dublin for the rugby next year. Bex from Surrey, Jon and Sherell from Sunderland and Jose from Madrid were more interesting guys we met this last week.
With Christmas fast approaching we decided here would be a good place to stay because we have some friends here and dont really want to be on the road Christmas day although we are thinking of climbing mt. Sinai on Christmas Eve night and watching sunrise there Christmas morning. Its supposed to be a popular traveller tradition here but temp goes to about -5c at night up there this time of year so we will have to see.
Well anyway we hope everybody at home has a very happy Christmas and have a drink or two for us, miss you all loads Slan Leat.
Bene and Vadim at Tota
. Semy also introduced us to Benedicta (Bene) from La Rochelle and Vadim from Toronto who both worked at sea pioneer dive center and Vadim is a dive master so he took me for my Intro dive. It was a nerve wracking experience for somebody not 100% confident in the water, taking your regulator out of your mouth and throwing it aside then retrieving it and putting it back in your mouth at the bottom of the sea is unnatural to me but i managed it and dived to 12m below the surface. You really have to see the amazing fish and other sealife in the red sea. Did 2 more dives later with Vadim but had to cut my diving short due to a blocked ear canal caused by the water pressure. Jimmy passed his 4 day course and is now a certified open water diver. We met some great people here like the guys already mentioned.......Semy, Bene and Vadim. Merry Christmas
Hello Enda and James,
I trust you are both well and enjoying your travels. Judging by your pictures you have been having a brilliant time.
I have alwaya wanted to go to Egypt and I want to even more now.
So where are you off to next on your travels?
When is Roseanne flying out to see you?
Everything is good over here. I am going to Leeds on Saturday for the festive season then back to work on Wednesday.
I think Liverpool's form has improved since you went out there Enda. We won't win the title but third place should be well within out grasp.
Hope to hear from you soon. Enjoy your Christmas wherever you are if I don't.
Michael
