This city is sick!
Entry 14 of 21 | show all | print this entry |
...you need heaps of time and a good knowledge of the transit system here, if you want to get around without a car. Walking is nearly impossible, everything is spread out over such an enormous area. And that is exactly the problem for the public transport. The subway doesn't go to all areas and is VERY underdeveloped. The buses go kind of everywhere, but it takes ages!! First, you most likely have to wait endlessly until one drops by. They advertise with "you don't need a timetable when you want to ride with us". I wanted to go from Hollywood to Beverly Hills yesterday (you can probably figure out, that it isn't that far) It took me about an hour. So if you can avoid riding public transport: do it! (ok, if you're a backpacker with a limited budget, it's not really avoidable) That's also the reason, why I took a city-day-tour today to go to all the spots I hadn't seen so far....up to the Hollywood sign lookout, Santa Monica, Venice Beach, and drove past around 50 of the homes of the celebrities in Bel Air / Beverly Hills... Whose? You name them! Even Justin Timberlake drove past us (although I didn't see his face...). Just don't ask about the house prices there. And we went to one of the High Schools, Dirty Dancing was filmed in. Anyway, one of the first sentences of our guide: "You've chosen the best tour, this city has to offer" (I'm sick of these phrases) and "The way I make my money is with the tips. People usually tip me with 10 Dollars." -> ???? Close to the end of the tour, he gave a homeless guy a spare water bottle, saying to us: "I don't give anything to people asking me to do so." Not to mention, he had worked with most of the film productions that took place here in the last, let's say, 30 years. What happened on Thursday? I went to the Universal Studios. Alfons description is the best: "It' the embodiment of american lifestyle." Just amazing. Haven't seen such a crazy amusement park before. Starting with the guy at the entrance, "smiling" all over his face, continuing with the guy on the Studio Tour with the alien-like sunglasses, and finishing with all the action shows the music that was played all over the place and last but not least with all the other visitors.
Looking forward to Fiji now and a bit more down to earth lifestyle... hopefully not with too many 24/7 drunk people in the resorts. There's something I already know: 10 days are way too short....
