you are backpacking LA???
Entry 13 of 21 | show all | print this entry |
Came here on Monday by train. Not by bus, as originally planned. It would have been nearly 5 hours faster and only 2/3 the price, but it would have also gone over the freeway, without being able to see the magnificent coastline. Not to mention the train was much more comfy. Not like the well-known 2nd class of the ICE (and other) trains in Germany. They might be faster amd quieter, but over here you get to know what the seating should be like. It was quite similar to the Canadian, about 50cm wide seats, 80cm of space between them, footrests and a car, that has a windowed roof. Double deck, of course. The only thing they've got to work out here is the tracks. But that's quite ok, as the train rides at an relaxing speed, where you have enough time to have a look at the landscape or do other things... For me, it wasn't much more than sitting around, looking outside and from time to time, write in my journal. I was about 7 days behind back then and am now I guess again missing the last 6 days. Hope reading this stuff will be funny in a couple of years...who knows. Also have to struggle with my left foot since sunday. we made a rest at this beautiful little lake with this slippery stone. couldn't stop me from slipping down it about a metre or so and cutting half of my left foot's sole. don't wanna go into details now. but it wasn't that deep but still cant really walk normally until now. but its starting to get better, should be alright again soon. Met four people in Yosemite who also wanted to go down to LA and from which I got that tip with the train from, so I went with them... First wanted to stay in sanfran for the monday to do some shopping, but as i couldn't walk at all that day, the train ride to LA was more than welcome... always nicer if you know someone on such a long ride. The hostel turned out to be more a motel and though its on hollywood boulevard its still a couple of blocks off from where the life takes place. meaning: at the train station a guy asked us, if we were seriously backpacking LA. said then something like: "you're freaking guys. i can't get that" then a car stopped next to us and the guys asked where we were going. but they didn't even really know what a backpackers hostel was or where ours might be. however, it's more a motel and we got a still quite spacious room, but first of all directly over the breakfast area and second it was the entrance to a second room as well. so not really top notch. the price is quite alright for it. and yes: you can see the Hollywood sign from the patio. LA is really freaky, and indeed a city built for cars. there is a metro system and buses though, but it usually takes ages to get somewhere. i spent the first day around the hostel, as i still could only walk on my left foot's toes. so walked up hollywood boulevard over the walk of fame, and back on sunset blvd. heaps of tourists though. todays program was downtown, with all its quarters. don't expect to get 'real' fashion in the fashion district, and a couple of empty buildings in the older parts of the city. the financial district is quite small, only a few towers. have seen much nicer and better planned downtowns before!
