At the dam we did a a tour that was advertised as 30mins but lasted well over an hour.
It included a 10min video, a look inside original tunnels built during the construction of the dam, a look at the generators used for hydroelectric power, and access to an observation deck where you can see the dam up close as well as the new by-pass bridge. The tour was really interesting and revealed what an incredible feat of engineering the dam was. The project was finished in 5 years, 2 years ahead of schedule! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoover_dam
We made our way from the Grand Canyon to Las Vegas today, the most pleasent 5 hours of driving that we've had so far. It was made all the better by our 3 stops on the way. 1st up was breakfast at Denny's a couple of hours after we got up at our campsite. We were famished and Denny's gave us a great fry-up and pancakes on the cheap. We'll definitely be visiting there again. 2nd stop was for petrol ("gas"), stopping at a station on the highway that offered 10cents of per gallon if you paid cash... result! Cheapest petrol of the trip so far at $3.49 a gallon. Then came the 3rd stop: The Hoover Dam!
