Uni town in the clouds

I survived an intense couple of days on freezing buses from Ciudad Bolivar to Valencia (10:30pm-9:00am), then on to Merida (11:00am-11:30pm). I fully intended to stay another night in Ciudad Bolivar beforehand, but returning from the Angel Falls it turned out the posada I wanted was all booked out so an overnight bus out of there was my only option. Fortunately the Irish girls were still following me around obediently, so passing the time at the bus terminal was possibly less painful. We didn't really need to entertain ourselves, because we discovered our very own singing/dancing Britney Spears slut right there! For those of you unfamiliar with "Raggaeton", it is sort of the Latin American take on hip-hop. Every song sounds the same (ie. shithouse), and contains lyrics about how wicked they are, how much money they have, and how many women they shag. Usually this is compiled in the least tasteful way, and mostly blatant so as not to confuse the punters with innuendo. Anyway, everywhere you go this rubbish is spewing its way out of car stereos or store radios - it's almost unavoidable, and tempts me to wear my earplugs 24/7. I continue to digress. So, this girl at the bus terminal knows all the provocative moves obviously lifted from the music video - we're talking hip-thrusting, arse-slapping, gyrating around, pole dancing, dropping to the floor etc etc... and she's putting on a show right in the bus terminal. We start chatting a bit. Her name is Maria, she is 4 years old. Her mother is towards the other end of the building and is visibly relieved to have us baby sit her promiscuous handful of a daughter while she tends to her other 8 kids and grumpy husband. I have a photo of her sitting down (G-Rated), but did not dare to point a camera at her while she attempted to summon the devil with her dancing! "Ten years in the jailer's eye..."
So yes, I made it to Merida in the end. I had a bit of a struggle securing my ticket from Valencia to Merida thanks to my lack of Spanish skills concerning directions. ie. something like "it's across that street, then take the first right and the second left" totally screwed me. The bus only arrived 3hrs later than expected, but somehow expecting this I had actually phoned ahead to book a bed and to make sure they waited up for me. This was done completely in Spanish so I was well pleased with myself, and even more pleased at midnight to discover that they had in fact understood me and were there to let me in.
I've been here a few days now, and have been checking out the multitude of amazing tours available here. Merida is unlike anywhere else I've seen in Venezuela, and I like it. I've also signed up for some private Spanish lessons for all of next week so looks like I will be hanging around here for a while. I have a fantastic bakery within 2mins walk, a lovely view of the mountains from my room window, everything is cheap, the town is simply inundated with gorgeous uni girls, and the weather is pleasant every single day. Why the hell not stay here!?
