Living the Dream
Entry 27 of 74 | show all | print this entry |
I made it. Finally. I was meant to fly into Munich on the 5th and sleep in the airport (waiting for the rest of the boys to arrive), but instead I managed to miss my flight and things were not looking good for me. To be fair, I had allowed 3hrs for the 25km trip to the Beijing Airport, but then spent a harrowing 2.5hrs stuck in traffic - even throwing money at my taxi driver did not help. At the airport I still had 30mins before official departure time, but the lady would not let me through. I then frantically called Super Travel Agent Jan in Perth to see if there was any light at the end of the tunnel for me. Within 30mins she had saved my soul and found me a seat on the same flight the following day.
Arriving in Munich a day later than planned meant I had to somehow contact the boys and let them know I had arrived. Luckily I had fired them an email soon after I missed my flight, and even luckier one of them actually received it. I spent an hour trying to call mobile phones but did not have any luck, and was starting to brick it quite frankly. Finally I got through to Mark, and had just enough time to arrange a pick up point before the phone cut out. The rest of the boys had all managed to meet up without a hitch, and had not only picked up our motorhome but had also had time to do some shopping for a shitload of beer. Beer is horrendously cheap at 6 euros for 20 x 500mL bottles, so we are in a lot of trouble (but it is sort of fortunate for me considering I was fined 2 cartons for missing my flight).
The days are bloody long here - sunrise is about 6am (only an estimate because I haven`t actually seen one of course), and sunset is around 10pm. I must say it`s nice to actually see the sky again after smoggy Beijing, and the countryside is quite beautiful as it zooms by on the Autobahn.
We managed to leg it to Ulm for the first night, but failing to find anywhere to park we decided the right thing to do was pull off onto a deserted block of land where there seemed to be a few campervans already set up. It just so happened they were all crazy gypsies, and apart from yelling at us they were also staring very sternly at times. We showed them by playing boisterous drinking games well into the night, and then we thought they were going to kill us the next day so we lit up the tyres to get out of there, forgetting our bag of bottles we had left outside.
