Day 62. Coober Pedy, South Australia. 755km from Uluru (Ayers Rock).
We awoke at 6.10am and packed up the electrical lead (having done all our packing the night before). We were on the road and at the petrol station to fuel up for our long trip by 6.30am. We headed back into the park to watch Uluru at sunrise. Sadly it was much the same as last night (and much the same as 12 years ago)...not much cop! The clouds meant that the sun didn't directly hit the rock! Ah well at least we were up early and ready for our massive trek to another state!
We shared the drive equally and passed through Kulgera and Marla on our way to Coober Pedy. The drive was incredibly boring with not much to look at. We did manage to both get a sleep. We closed the curtains at the back, put the doona on the back seat, slackened the seat belt...brilliant!
We arrived in Coober Pedy around 4.30pm (having spent 9 hours on the road) and checked into a HOTEL! I remember the previous trip the McLaughlin clan took and how much we enjoyed the underground hotel. So we decided to splurge a bit and fork out for a hotel for two nights.
The room isn't exactly underground, but it has been dug out and therefore the sandstone walls are legit. It is incredibly dark when the lights are out. It was awesome to have a shower and not pack up your belongings afterwards...I could actually leave my loofah to drip-dry...my how very civil!
We went to Umberto's Restaurant for dinner (part of the Desert Cave Hotel). My meal of fish with banana/avocado sauce was very salty and despite being a "fillet" had several big bones. My complaint fell on deaf ears as the bill arrived with not so much as a free coffee! Aaron...sorry Mountain Goat, decided on the "Real Taste of the Outback" which included; camel, emu, kangaroo and beef! He enjoyed it but said the roo was a bit tough (as it always is)!
Afterwards we headed down to the underground bar for a couple of beers before heading back to the room. We're now sat in our little underground lair, watching TV (sacre bleur) and raiding the mini bar (forgot to purchase amber ales on the way into Coober Pedy).
I'm looking forward to having a look around tomorrow and remembering the places we visited before. May also call into Uncle Joe's (I think that was his name) Pizzeria for dinner. Not long now people's...
