Leaving Cody on Friday morning we headed south through Meetesee to Thermopolis through rolling ranch country.  We picked up US 20 at Thermopolis which led us through Wind River Canyon, one of the most beautiful drives we've ever taken rivaling the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway we had just been on.  Outstanding!  From there to Fort Collins it was pretty bland.  We did see a fox and some pronghorn antelope; but, the land was pretty boring.  Casper, Wy.was not very attractive at all and was truly an oil boom town with drilling supply and equipment all over.

Saturday was a nostalgic day for us as we recreated a long day trip we did on our honeymoon 44 years ago this month.  Leaving the campground we journeyed through Loveland to Estes Park; the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park.  Estes Park has grown like a bad weed.  I called it Wisconsin Dells on steroids. It is crowded and sprawling with tourist hotels, condos, restaurants, and shops. And on Saturday it was packed.  We entered the park and headed over the top on Trail Ridge Drive which takes you above the treeline and has spectacular views.  Driving down the west side of the Frontal Ridge we recrossed the Continental Divide through Berthoud Pass and then stopped at Central City.  When we were here in 1968 this was a cute old mining town that had a few honky tonk bars and restaurants.  In 1992 Colorado approved casino gambling and Central City followed the model of Deadwood, SD. and the town is filled with casinos.  We had a late lunch and strolled around making our puny donation and then headed home.  44 years brought a lot of changes to this area and many many more people.
