We are moving along in the car north toward Baltimore realizing that we are going to need to stop somewhere in between.  Kevin is jonesing to visit Charlottesville, VA.  Where his Alma Mater resides. He graduated from the University of Virginia.  I am very tired and while I have enjoyed this trip immensely am approaching overload.  A little cranky, a little impatient, a lot less fun to be around.

Kevin is really excited about possibly visiting C-Ville and I'm in no mood to argue.  I just kind of want to sleep and there are no real exciting spots along the rest of this way so It's UVA.

I don't have strong memories of this town.  I once dated a gal for a couple of months who would get all misty recalling the glory of Charlottesville.  It didn't work out, she got her nursing degree and moved to California where she is now married.  The other was a trip I made with a different gal to visit a friend and her husband on her 30th birthday.  The people were nightmarish, the guy was a five star tool and to say I had a good time would be going really, really, really, awfully far.  It was a can't wait to get out of here time.  Now do I blame Charlottesville for these experiences.  Yes, yes I do.  But, it is kind of like when a bunch of people are at the site of a huge fight and you get taken away in the paddy wagon because you wanted to get a closer look but, really weren't in the fight.  You are in jail and you explain to them that you had nothing to do with this scene, you were passing through.  You didn't know what was happening.  They still arrest you and grudgingly set you free.  Yes, this is Charlottesville to me.  Probably won't take the rap but, the arrest is showing up on your record anyway.

So we head into the quaint downtown area and have a bite at the College Inn.  Kevin is noticeably tripping back in time.  He's taking the whole scene in.  It has been 10 years since he's been there and I'm just hungry and I kind of want a beer.  A festive non-winter beer.  Corona will do.  Our waitress was a student of economics at UVA so Kevin had an immediate bond.  I naturally asked her a million questions about her future and what she wanted and all that stuff.  I found out that she was moving to NYC in June to work in compliance for Barclay's.  We volunteered that she should be prepared for everyone to hate her because compliance prevents you from doing your job right and are generally annoying and don't have any idea as to how business gets done they just know what the books they read say it should be done.  Most business folks in finance want to kill them.  We made sure she was aware of this and that it would be a great learning experience for her and that she should look around to see what she might like to do at Barclay's.  Things to do that are not compliance.

We head over to our hotel.  Earlier in the evening we found a bitchy hotel desk person at the Fairfield Inn lacking and went Econo Lodge instead.  The room was decent but, the heat was dry and hot except for in the bathroom which was freezing.  I propped the door open so that it might take some of the over heat and heat up.  Not so fast my friends.  It was still cold in the morning.  That night I had terrible dreams about being in my car and going down mountain hills without brakes.  I would find a turn off where trucks would go when they have not breaks, traverse it and then roll way back down achieving breakneck speed in the opposite direction and I would be flying along into Northern New England towns that looked vaguely familiar.  Somewhere along this trip I called Miranda and she used her super powers to visit me on this see saw horrible dream.  I remember being surprised that she got to Northern New England so fast.  Somewhere up in northern Maine the car finally stopped and I woke up.  Miranda disappeared back to wherever she came from.and I was left befuddled and wondering how I was going to get new brakes and if Miranda was the only Beck that had super powers.  Maybe Michael has them too.  Perhaps they are a Wonder Couple their rings activate their powers and somewhere Mike is an Ice Canoe.  I'm not sure.

The next day we grab some bagels and talk about social networking sites which Kevin despises.  I know this already so I enjoy playing the soft devil's advocate.  We end up agreeing that Linkedin is the most potentially productive of the lot.  Then Kev meets with some Career folks and I sleep on some sweet leather lounges in the lobby.  There wasn't much sleep for me the night before.

After the career stuff, we hit the bookstore, packed up the stage coach and left town.  Heading for BMore.  But, not without some Chik-Fil-A.  Tasty indeed.  Big Bob was the greeter at the Fil-A.  We mused that he probably worked at the other places across the street, negotiating with each of them over 30 years until he got the best rate.

Then we moved on.  Kevin sensed my vagueness behind the wheel.  I was fading fast and he was smart enough to take the keys from me at the gas station.  I was relieved.  If it was a baseball game I just got lit up in the second inning, the other team just put a five spot up and I had to come out of the game.

So it was three or four hours of driving through VA to DC and finally to MD.  Baltimore.  My recent former home which sounds really strange to say. More about BMore int he next entry.
