Something inside me says I need to check out my old neighborhood. So I zip out and run around my old hood. It's like I never left because it all feels like an extended vacation and really, I've only lived back in Trumbull, CT for about 10 days so I drive through the old roads by rote. It's like I'm going back into the house on Fait Avenue. I pull into the back drive way with the communal parking lot and stop in front of the back door. I still have a key and I kind of want to go in and see what's happened to the place. To poke around in a place that holds a lot of memories. Some of them great, a lot of them not so great and a host of in-between. So I stop outside the door and look at it for a while and drive on by leaving those memories behind. I speak to Miranda on the phone and learn that Michael (her husband) had band practice tonight. I decide to swing over there for a visit before out dinner. We chat for a bit and I can see Miranda fading faster than light. So I let her off the hook for dinner. She had some drinks in the afternoon with the gang from school and wasn't much for the evening. So I scooted back to O'Donnell and met Kevin, Sarah and the inimitable Swan.
We hit up the Speakeasy. Which is famous for it's Chicken Phoenix or Phoenix Chicken. The dish is outstanding. We had some apps and some drinks and left into the cold of the Baltimore night. Off to Claddagh. A bad idea because sometimes if it is $1.beers and college is in session it is going to suck. All that commotion all that heavy bass and ridiculous lights. Since I'm not 21 this was not my scene and I was overjoyed to leave. We next hit Coburn's which seemed like a private party was happening as no bartender was in sight so that signaled our exit.
Next up was the Pickled Parrot. Shannon and the owner were running the place. Shannon we have known for years. She is thin as a rail yet top heavy with ears decorated with multiple earrings. She is also very good at keeping drinks in front of us. We hang for a while and eventually close the place. I am exhausted and we dally out front discussing the menu with the pompous owner who is in "sell mode" when we already like the place. Shannon is in "defend" mode regarding some menu item comments and I'm in "sleep mode" and am trying to hint the conversation to an end by meandering up the road aimlessly.
We scoot back to he place and now I'm overtired. I chill in the bed and then fade off into sleep just wanting to get back to sleep in my own bed.
See I have a bed these days. I'm staying at my sister's in Trumbull and it is home for now but, my only true, my own space is the bed, my bed in the basement. I want to be done with the road for a while and I am ready to take this car to zero.
The next morning I get up at 9:00 throw my stuff in the car and zip down the road in my Jammie's.
The end of this trip is upon me and day 38 beckons.
