We visited Christchurch today-the largest city on the South Island and the third city we have visited in this wonderful country! We docked in Lyttelton and took a shuttle bus into Christchurch, about 7 miles away.
Each city has had a slightly different flavor-Christchurch is considered the gateway to the recreation areas and is in a beautiful setting. It was a planned community, modeled on Oxford with other English influences.
We arrived on a blustery, rainy day, so there was not much of the outdoors that called to us. I think the tropical weather of the last month has softened us up! We are in the "roaring forties"-latitudes that are reputed to be pretty rough-and getting closer to Antarctica, so the temperatures have been dropping...57 degrees today, 67 degrees yesterday, and in the 70s the day before
The center of Christchurch is reserved for pedestrians, so it is easy to just stroll around near the Anglican Cathedral.
We purchased tickets on the on-off trolley to go from Cathedral Square in the center of town to the Arts Centre a few blocks to the west. We visited Cambridge Art Center, where many local artists are represented in shops and galleries, and the Canterbury Museum, which documents early history of the area.
Then we took the trolley around the entire loop, crossing over the Avon River a couple of times, to get a sense of how the city is laid out. As in the other cities we have visited in New Zealand, there are acres of parkland, a botanical garden, and museums and art galleries.

AMAZING
Hi Kit and Jannie,
I just got the site and I am so impressed at the wonderful story you are telling us. Jannie you look wonderful and exactly the same. (Kit you look good too, but I honestly don't remember you much. I do know my mom had a great time in Hawaii with you) I am so looking forward to April and hope we can meet in Ft Laud when you return. I am passing this on to the rest of the Busch kids, as this is really a great thing. You both are inspirations.
Love,
Rita in Florida
