What did you fill in after the ellipsis, dear reader? "A single step"? Cliche.
No, dear reader, the correct answer is "A kitchen fire".
I was scrubbing my kitchen down, or rather cleaning it so that it wouldn't grow moss before I returned. And I decided to take a pita bread and bake it, as a snack. I got so involved with scrubbing a cast iron pan that I lost track of the fast-cooking pitas and before I knew what was happening, I smelled a little smoke. No big deal; I've burned pitas before.
But this time, when I opened my oven, flames leapt out at me. I tried closing the oven, which didn't really help. The smoke started pouring out of the vent. Eventually, I had no choice but to get out my trusty fire extinguisher; as Alton Brown puts it, the only single use device you should keep in your kitchen.
To avoid setting off the nearby tenants' smoke detectors (mine is covered up, since it's so sensitive it goes off every time I take a shower), my door is now wide open to my balcony. It's -16.7° right now.
Good thing it's 28° in Dubai. Bad thing I'm spending my time committing arson instead of packing.
