Where I stayed
Blue Hill Farm Country Inn
So here are a few pictures of the drive up here. We took the slow route, along the coast on US Highway 1. The highway passes through dozens of really old villages and there is no mistaking that you're in New England. As Laurie said in her comment, it looks like a postcard everywhere you look.
We've both noticed that Maine feels quintessentially American. We've had that feeling in Massachusetts and elsewhere in New England but it feels especially strong in Maine. I think that's because it is so relaxed and natural here...a little less contrived for the most part. Blue Hill, for example, has American flags hanging from every light post in the town. We see that at home but only when it is the 4th of July or some other patriotic holiday
Maybe that whole cradle of democracy thing has really stuck with them here through the generations...
We stopped at a couple of potters' studios on the way up here. Mainers are big on crafts and pottery and weaving seem to be two of the favorites. The other would be wood crafts. My dad would be right at home here. It seems like every few miles there's some carved lawn art, bird houses or whirly gigs of some sort on display for sale in some carver's yard along the highway.
We also stopped to get a pint of freshly picked wild blueberries from a couple at a roadside stand. They were the little tiny ones and they were delicious! We made another stop for steamers and a last one for ice cream cones (it was a long drive and we're on holiday!).
When we finally arrived at Blue Hill it was exactly as I expected it would be. You could make a movie in this place, it looks like such a quintessential New England village. The Blue Hill Farm is a very comfortable place and the innkeepers (twins, a brother and sister) are very nice. This place is so quiet that I'm going to go into shock when I have to return to civilization. But until then, we're going to get completely unwound and do some Olympic relaxing!
