From Katherine we headed east towards the border with WA, a very long and boring drive for the most part. Excitment only came when we hit the border itself, and we were greeted by a friendly customs officer who was very upset when upon inspection of our van, including esky could not find anything which could be confiscated! We continued onto Lake Argyle which Walt (the didge man ) had told us was a must, especially for the Silver Cobler fish which was to be found and eaten here. It was a 45km detour from the main highway, but we were happy enough to do it as we thought it would be a great place to stay for the night. However upon arrival we were out of luck. The Restaurant was closed, no silver cobler to be found! Damm it !! Dissapointed we decided to look over the enormous lake, made for a hydro electric dam in the 1960s. It was beautiful, sided by mountains, with a small beach, gorge to one side and park area to relax. From the view points we imagined eating our Silver Cobler and Chips whilst watching the sun set - Damm it - After having set our mind on the fish and chip supper and being let down we decided to push on and head to Kununurra for the night, being close to the lake, we thought that we might be in more luck here. Time was pushing on so we hot footed it onto town. Upon arrving we checked into to a site (lovely pitch right by the main road!!) and went into town, only to find that the first site we had looked in on upon our arrival was the best place to get fish and chips - Damm it!
There was another place but it was not open so pasta in passata sauce it was to be again. We hit the pool expecting the kids to be in bed and it was getting quite dark, but were suprised by how many were still there - we happened to find out not too long after that the clocks had changed since crossing the border which meant that it was an hour and a half earlier than we thought - This explained the lack of take aways being open !
Very early to bed again then !!
The following morning we went into the tourist information to see if we could get tours into the Argyle diamond Mine - where the world famous Pink diamond is found and more importantly the Bungle Bungles, or Purnululu. Nothing, Nadda, Zip - The trip into the mines was 2-300 bucks each - for a 20 minute flight - the bungle bungles were more, unless we were to hire our own 4x4. After calling a few places we realised that this was going to be more expensive than a basic tour and as the tours had finished for the season we were out of luck! - Damm It !!
Thoroughly p*ssed off we again hit the road to see how far we could get.
