It'd been a damn long time since we were put to work**, particularly out in the prairie. Regardless, we were keen, we were eager and we were ready to stay in one place for more than 2 nights. We settled in quickly, enjoyed spending time with those in the community and quickly got into the swing of how things work at the Vlierhof. We spent our days doing a range of activities across the property, ranging from rehabilitating a pond system, building a washing-line, fixing light installations & dodgy doors, digging holes, filling holes, pulling weeds, planting seeds and even the odd bit of cleaning.

Some of our favourite work was in the kitchen though, where we cooked for the 20-30 people there, being overly elaborate and doing an Australian (Shepherd’s Pie, with Seitan Mince, Damper & Tomato Chutney) and Indian (Fresh Yogi Chai, Korma, and Kulfi) night – all components haus-gemacht from scratch. Our least favourite work was also in the Kitchen, doing the dishes suck exponentially.

We also had time to relax, take in the surrounding nature and met some fantastic people. We saw a prelude of some Norwegian stage work, which will always be remembered – especially the artists’ pre/post-philosophising. We also got to meet some Mexicano’s, and whilst one was heavily gang-affiliated and kept threatening us (Julia….) – it was awesome spending our time with them eating cachauates; as well as being totally cliché and drinking horchata before smashing piñatas. We’ll see you kids in 2014.

**Although I still contest that long-term travelling is a full-time job, particularly when you are living primarily in a tent and out of the back of a cinquecento.
