Nice enough city, horribly misleading parking system.

We entered, and performed our usual routine of finding free parking in amongst the hustle and bustle, to find an amazing spot smack-bang in the middle of town. We stopped, searched for the no/paid-parking signs so readily seen in every other city, and were pleasantly shocked to see none. As we walked around blissfully unaware, commending Vienna for providing such ideal free parking, we luckily stumbled onto the tiniest section of wording on the free map we just received from the tourist office stating that although no signs are provided, parking must be paid for within all of central Vienna. Tickets for parking can be bought in tobacconists, hotels and other random locations. These also have no signage explaining this, and there are no automated machines on the streets either. Fucking great. We rushed back and found a 40 Euro fine on our windscreen. Not up for paying anything to an Austrian I didn't need to, a quick stop at the nearest hotel which was kind enough to let me use their phone, a few words with the rather nice man on the complaints line, and the fine was waived. Good choice. Quite the little revenue scheme Vienna has come up with for its visitors.

With all the money we were now "up", we got to enjoy touring the city, seeing the sights, visiting the fantastic Museum Quarter (in particular the Kunsthalle, where we saw a Basquait/Street Art/Keith Haring exhibition), and pretty much squandered all of our money immediately on some coffees (6 Euros each!).
