Hi from the Big Tree Park!

Today we didn't do all that much so it won't take long to explain.  We drove a 4 hour trip but it wound up being a 5 hour trip because we moved at 2 mph every 10 minutes.  Once we got to Three Rivers (thanks to Carson and Hunter for the books on CD- they help pass time) we checked in at the Buckeye Lodge.

Once I got into the room I noticed there were some rocks and river out of the back door.  I instantly raced out of the door and was leaping on the rocks and finding sticks before mom could even get outside.  I saw another one of those God made slip n slides, but this one looked a wee bit rougher and I was a wee bit scared.  Danger is my middle name, so I ran inside, jumped into my swimsuit and was sliding down that slide fast as lightening.

I had a little trouble with the current because after I went down I found that I kept slipping and I could not get back up.  After a few slides, I swam over to the big rock where mom and dad were sitting and hopped out beside them.  As I was walking past dad noticed these little back squiggly things on my body.  I looked down and saw them squirming all around and I felt a little sick, but I got over it.  Dad said I should pluck them off and then take a nice shower because they could be bacteria that could get inside my brain and slowly eat my brain out.  This quickened my pace as I walked up the patio and I quickly leaped out of my clothes and into the shower to scrub my body.

All this time mom went to the desk to ask about the water to see if they needed to take me to the hospital.  She said people are in the water all the time and no bacteria had been reported.  I still scrubbed real good.

Once this saga had passed, we drove into Sequoia National Park and got the pleasant surprise that the roads were closed due to construction and they were only opening on the hour.  Finally we got in and drove on this stinking, curvy road for about 1/2 and hour - that had to be the longest 1/2 that had ever been.   We got to Sequoia's Half Dome- Moro Rock.  After we trekked up this mountain we looked around and saw nice, beautiful sights such as:  Castle Rock, Deer Hill, and Sawtooth Rock.  Finally we got out of the squiggly road onto the straight road headed to the pizza factory which was delicious.  I had bacon pizza and mom and dad had Hawaiian pizza.

It was a good day but a lot of driving.  Miss you guys a lot,

Today we headed out of Yosemite and we did not hike Half Dome.  We stopped at Bridalveil Falls on the way out to get a shot of that waterfall and then drove through the mountain tunnel and started the trip to Sequoia National Park.

Road construction was going on so it added about an hour to the trip.  (For the benefit of Chuck P. I'll list our lunch:  PB&J, Cheez its, and cookies).  We arrived at Buckeye Tree lodge around 2:00 and were pleasantly surprised with out view.... this property sits on a river- in fact our back door is about 50 feet from the river and massive rocks that are there.  This was paradise for Noah to climb on and he enjoyed himself a good long time.

We headed to Sequoia National Park and were very surprised at how curvy the roads were.  We never got above 20 mph.  We passed a UPS truck and thought of Brandon H. and how rough it would be to have that route!  In addition to the curves, part of the park road is being worked on.  Traffic runs on the hour and it takes 30 minutes to get to where you line up to do this so we had a good amount of time to mill around the Visitor's Center.

One interesting sight was an Acorn Woodpecker which was fussing at something in the tree outside of the Visitor's Center.  It is a beautiful bird!  One very annoying sight is the number of gnats/flies that are around.  We kept thinking that if we just went a bit higher they would go away- they do not.  I'm not sure if this unusual hot weather here in Sequoia has brought them out or if they are always here, but when you hike past someone, everyone comments on the bugs!!!  BTW- it was 95 degrees today at 3:30.  By 5:30 though it was 75.  It seems to get hot only from 11-4 though-haha.

Moro Rock is one of the best vista points in Sequoia so we hiked up this- those 400 steps seemed like nothing after yesterdays 600.  These were actual steps so that made it easy to get right on up to the top.  The view from here is a spectacular view of the great Western Divide.

Giant Sequoia's are everywhere so we pulled off of the road and had Noah get by one just to get something for you to judge its size by.  Also, the picture of the tree that you'll see below has a minivan beside it- the size of the trees are unbelievable.

Both Yosemite and Sequoia have road work going on- a lot of it.  Most is due to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  What this means to us is a lot of slow moving around.

Thursday evening. We're up to 8.6" rain now. Another couple of inches expected overnight. Ground is starting to feel spongy. A little. It was so hard baked before it has taken time to soften. We are glad for the rain.

Maybe you could capture some of that pine scented air in a jar and bring it to me Rhonda? I am being totally lazy and unmotivated over here.

But I am enjoying your trip vicariously. And I got a great book to read. :)

love you.
