Hello there!!!
Today we had the worst drive yet. I almost tossed my cookies. I don't know if it was the longest but it definitely was the curviest. Once we got to San Francisco we checked in at the Best Western which is a very nice place. We ate at the Cafe Pescatore which was yummy. Also we did a night tour of the Alcatraz Prison which is an island about a mile away from San Fran. We did an audio personal headset tour which was nice because it told you where to go. On the ride over we made the unfortunate discovery that our camera's batteries happened to be DEAD..... luckily though the museum sold them. After the tour we took a little side tour which gave a little explanatory on the attempted escapes. They also gave a demonstration on the opening of the cell doors. Well that's about all. I hope everybody is good.

We drove up the Pacific Coast Highway to San Fransisco today.  This was a beautiful and scenic drive (for about 45 minutes).  Then Noah and I began to feel a bit queasy and we spent the rest of the ride wishing for it to end.

There were a few bicyclists out today and they were biking up all of the hills on the PCH which was very amazing to us.  There was a bit of trauma to our wallet today as gas in Big Sur was $4.39 per gallon.  After James got over the shock, he filled her on up.  The bonus was the attendant came out and cleaned the windshield.

San Franscisco is very crowded!  Lots of one way streets, but we made it to the hotel safely and began walking around.  We are staying in the Fisherman's Wharff area so there are a lot of shops/vendors/street performers near here.  One ingenious fellow has a dog that he has pretend to be "dead" and he has a sword laid up on its throat.  For $1 he will bring the dog "back to life".  The dog is extremely well trained and laid there with it's eyes closed until someone put in $1.  I think I need to work on my dog's trick abilities.

Our Alcatraz tour required us to be there at 6:15, so we ate dinner and went straight over.  The weather today in San Fran was very warm-at least 86 and it was clear as a bell on the bay.  The workers at Alcatraz said that this was a perfect night there as usually the visability is extremely limited.

We boarded the ferry and sat on top so we could get a clear view of San Fran as we pulled away from the dock.  We saw the Bay Bridge very well, but could only see a little of the Golden Gate Bridge (we are going to see that tomorrow).

The Alcatraz tour had us pick up headsets which guided us through various parts of the prison.  We learned about the guards who worked there, the different prisoners, the dining area, various escape attempts, the use of Alcatraz as a military prison before it became a maximum federal prison, etc.  We loved the tour- it was quite informative.  In fact we found out that the government began using the island after the gold rush in 1849 to protect the area from those who would come in and steal all of the gold that was believed to have been there.

After our tour we went outside for the "Moon over Alcatraz" lecture to hear about the tides and how they affected various prison attempts.  The bay and the ocean appear to exchange a great deal of water over each day!  That was quite informative.  It has made me decide that when i get back to Virginia I am going to go outside every night and draw what the moon looks like.  I don't pay enough attention to what phase the moon is in.

We are exhausted so please excuse any and all typos.  We are still trying to get up at 6 or 6:30 so that we are not going into shock when we get back to Colonial Heights.

Have a wonderful Lord's Day,

It rained a couple hours ago...........I guarantee it will pour tomorrow since we are scheduled to play golf and I just washed the car.

I was watching some extreme motorcycle riding which included the hills and one-way streets in S.Fran......It looked cool and lots of neat houses situated on the narrow streets...

Anyway, enjoy the ride........
