Where I stayed
I took a break last night so I am definitely typing tonight! Today we drove to La Jolla. Once there we checked in at the Travellodge. We then went to the beach but didn't get in but did find a Geo cache. Then we strolled around and found a few Caches and went to town and bought a few cookies. Then we came back to the hotel and sat for a bit whilst mom typed then me and dad hiked down to the beach which is only a block away. We surfed for a while, shredded some pipes and... O.K. so all we did is watched other people surf... we can dream can't we?
Afterwards we came back and went to a restaurant called Cafe Milano. It was delicious, I got spaghetti and sausage, dad got lasagna, and mom got gnocchi. We strolled the town after dinner and I got a caramel apple with white chocolate and white and chocolate chips! YUUUMMM! Then we walked back and did another geo-cache and came in
Good evening folks!
We have a few questions that have been submitted that we wanted to answer. The "Shoe Tree" we saw and thought was interesting, but after a bit more research we have found that these are popping up everywhere! http://www.roadsideamerica.com/set/shoetrees.html has an article about this if anyone wants to read it.
Another question was if there were really this few people out here or were we being selective in our shots. We are not-we are taking the shots just as seen. There really aren't that many people here. On the trails in Joshua Tree there were 2 other cars at the base of the hike. Nobody is out here which is both comforting and a bit scary!
In Zion there were a few more hikers, but it was never that busy
Ron W. asked about the wildlife that we have seen. Unfortunately, we have NOT seen any big horn sheep, mountain lions, rattlesnakes (sorry Jordan!), or porcupines (sorry Mackenzie!). We have seen rabbits, bats, chipmunks, one huge hawk, some ground rodents (from afar fortunately), and FLIES! Who would have thought flies would have been at high altitudes or in the desert?
Today we drove to La Jolla and we walked from our motel down to the beach to watch the seals. La Jolla is a place Cyndi G. recommended that we come to and we are glad we did. The seals lived the epitome of the easy life- we enjoyed watching them. Seeing them brought to our mind Day 5 of Creation: "Then God said, "Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures...". We had a blast seeing them move both in the water and out on the shore.
There is a sign that says not to go down on to where the seals are "sunning" as this may "stress or scare" the seals
We also found a few geo-caches (think scavenger hunt using a gps) today. The shops here are nice but too expensive for my blood (think cheapskate if you want). We did find the Giraurd Bakery which sold very unique cookies. We all got some "dog shaped" cookies to eat in the room tonight- yum yum!
As Noah mentioned we went out for Italian tonight and it was fantastic. The owner had a fiat that he kept parked out in front of the restaurant. He drives it every day to work so it is still going and is in excellent condition.
Some people have commented on our short stays at the motel and wondered if there were any tricks. A couple of things that we have done to make each transfer easier we decided to include in this blog. The first thing is that we keep all toiletries in a clear shoe storage bag. We hang it on the bathroom door and when we are ready to check out we roll it up (with all of the items in it) and stuff it in a bag
One other high tech device we have is a cardboard box that we got at Walmart Customer service. We keep our sugar, peanut butter, nabs, etc., in this box so we can easily lug it in the motel.
We do laundry every 5 days or so. Our jackets we keep hung up in the back of the car. We also bought a cooler and we keep water, ice, and our jelly stocked in it at all times. Each hike requires at least 2 bottles of water per person so we keep a ton in there iced down.
That's about it for today. I had typed all of this earlier and somehow lost it so if it shows up in another blog or somewhere else accidentally, my apologies.
We love ready all of your comments either below the blog or on the side of the pictures. Thanks for following us and for all of the information you share when you do comment.
